Did you know that approximately 95% of pressure sores are preventable? –  Contrary to the name, pressure sores can be largely attributed to shear forces.  That’s right, somethings as simple as a person slipping down and slouching in their seat, dragging a person along bedsheets or even just sitting on a food crumb or crease, can start a miro-tear that then develops into a pressure sore.  Often these can affect the tail-bone area (sacrum), hips (greater trochanter’s), heals and bottom (ischial tuberosities).  Pressure sores can quickly deteriorate from a micro-tear to become very nasty. Once a pressure sore develops, it can be very difficult to treat.  The answer is prevention!

What we do

1/ We assess you.  We look at your abilities and any medical, age-related or functional issues you may have.  Pressure sore risk is often a combination of factors that may include immobility, nutrition, manual handling techniques, posture, equipment and incontinence.

2/ We assess what may be the contributing factors.

3/ We then come up with a plan.

Recommendations  may include

  • Pressure relieving cushions and mattresses
  • Manual handling techniques
  • Self-help techniques
  • Referral to dietician, nurse or doctor
  • Carer education and much much more
